“I try to decorate my imagination as much as I can.”
It’s always a good idea to carry around a small notebook to catch stray ideas, and usually I do. Recently I was caught without so much as a scrap of paper, backstage at intermission with (and I can’t overstate the appropriateness of it) Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony” still echoing, while a hard-won story idea thundered around in my head waiting to escape. I grabbed the first thing I saw and got scribbling.
A violinist asked what I was doing, and I muttered something about “plot point.”
Sometimes the answer lies hidden in a paper plate.
